Venue: The Idler Academy.

Historian and broadcaster Dr Matthew Green is the author of The City that Fell off a Cliff, to be published by Faber & Faber in 2019. His first book was London: A Travel Guide Through Time. He writes for the Guardian and Financial Times, and appears in many TV and radio documentaries. He is the founder of Unreal City Audio, producing immersive historical tours of London.

Join Matthew for an immersive whirlwind tour of Britain’s lost cities, ghost towns and vanished villages. From the Stone Age cottages of Skara Brae in the Orkneys to the drowned metropolis of medieval Dunwich in Suffolk via Norfolk’s Nazi village and the sunken village of Capel Celyn in Snowdonia, picture the communities that fell through the fault lines of history, and better understand the forces that have shaped the way our isles look today. Using maps, vivid anecdotes and haunting photography, Matt will bring to life these lost worlds, animating the people who lived, worked, dreamed and died there, all the while reminding us of the precariousness of our towns and cities today.
