Tim Knox is director of Sir John Soane’s Musuem and author of the first major illustrated history of and guide to the museum: Sir John Soane’s Museum, London (2009). He’ll be presenting ‘Flights of Fancy: Stuffed Birds as Interior Decoration in the English Country House’.
Born in Africa, Tim grew up in Nigeria and Fiji before moving to Britain to complete his education, graduating from the Courtauld Institute of Art. He joined the National Trust in 1995 and was appointed as its Head Curator in 2002 – during which role he galvanised efforts to retain historic collections in National Trust houses. He became director of Sir John Soane’s Museum in 2005, is a Trustee of The Pilgrim Trust, and has also acted as Historic Buildings Adviser to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office since 2005.
Tim regularly writes and lectures on art, architecture, sculpture and the history of collecting. His lectures on architects and historic houses have taken him to Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York.
His passion for art and restoration has spilled over into his home Malplaquet House, which he has restored from dereliction. The 18th-century merchant’s house is the setting for his eclectic collections of natural history and art.
