Springtime at Port Eliot is sensational and has arrived just in time for the annual House & Garden Open Season. For 100 days only, visitors are welcome to roam freely in the beautiful gardens and explore the ancient treasure chest of a house that Peregrine and Cathy St Germans call home; a unique place that has been lived in for over 1000 years and believed to be the oldest continually inhabited dwelling in the UK.
The stunning riverside setting on the banks of the Lynher and the beautiful and private woodland and walled gardens make Port Eliot a wonderful choice for a relaxing day out. Wander through the daffodils explore the camellia glade and be stunned by drifts of wild garlic, primroses, hellebores, hyacinths, crocuses and snowdrops. On a sunny afternoon, why not sit on the bank near the Boat House with a good book and enjoy a picnic whilst looking out at the wonders of the estuary?
Mondays and Thursdays are a chance to see what life was like ‘below stairs’ with tours of the fascinating basements with the china closet and candle-lit wine cellars and Butler’s Pantry amongst many other former servants’ rooms to explore. A lucky few might even get the chance to try one of Housekeeper Kay’s delicious homemade biscuits straight out of the Big Kitchen oven!
The Long Gallery Tea Room is open from 09:00 to 17:00 and is a lovely space to relax and enjoy a gorgeous cake or light lunch.
