Join the Creative Resistance! In this year of youth activism, marching and protest, the fashion happenings in the Wardrobe Department are all about the power of joining in to make our world a brighter more brilliant place. Inspired by the spirit of the GLITTER AGAINST GLOOM collection by our wonderful guest ASHISH – who opens our programme - the great, the good and the original forces of all generations are converging to celebrate collaboration, changing attitudes and living and working differently.

This slogan-splashed t-shirt is designed by our activist fashion hero Ashish. He’ll be restaging his show to open the festival, and talking inspirationally about putting a whole new political meaning on the power of the visible fashion statement.

 

In a time of cuts, we’re thrilled to be hoisting the flag for the great tradition of British art education over our new ART SCHOOL stage. This is a weekend-long space for all kinds of hand-on doing-and-thinking sessions lead by designers, teachers and rebel thinkers of all kinds whose careers were all formed in art class…

MEET THE GAME-CHANGERS!

MOLLY GODDARD, LOUISE GRAY, ROTTINGDEAN BAZAAR, ED MARLER AND MATTHEW JOSEPHS, and the new-new RICHARD QUINN and CONNER IVES – all alumni from Central Saint Martins, will explain how acting in groups, in families, living out of London and even starting up in your student flat is reshaping fashion today.

MEET THE GREATS!

ZANDRA RHODES is in residence with MATCHESFASHION.COM in the Orangerie garden. Zandra will show her beautiful designs – which are now being issued in re-editions by Matches – and talk about how her colourful career began at the epicentre of the Royal College of Art fashion department in the Seventies.

STEPHEN JONES The show of the book! Stephen will tell his forty-year autobiography in hats in a show with clothes by GILES, bring to life Souvenirs written with SUSANNAH FRANKEL. They will talk about the crucial friendships he made at St Martins college of art, and how they began a career that went from Blitz Club to the heights of haute couture.

SHOWstudio will host a fashion illustration pop-up gallery in the Orangerie showing original artworks from its latest exhibition Fashion Flora - an exhibition that presents an explorative look at the use of flowers as a motif in fashion throughout the decades. Garments have been hand-selected by Flora Starkey, one of the most exciting floral designers working today, and date back as far the 1880s. Alongside the gallery, SHOWstudio will host interactive master classes with a selection of SHOWstudio’s UK based illustrators on the festival’s new Art School stage.

Amy Cartright, Amy Towle and Hannah Monkley are designers working at the costume house, Cosprop, who made a powerfully resonant protest at the Women’s March. They’ll speak about the movement, and that day - and will share their world of work in the movies and TV in a talk for students.

MEET THE NEW SUFFRAGETTES: three young women who marched as Suffragettes in the Women’s March are here to speak about how it changed their lives and why honouring the first feminist movement is vital now.

MEET YOUR INNER ARTIST: The creative whizzes in the Pencil Atelier are partnering up with John Lewis this year to stage even more spectacular workshops: RUBBISH COUTURE invites all to come and make a newspaper dress featuring John Lewis prints from their archives chosen by Pencil’s ruler Jenny Dyson. Designs will be showcased at the annual world famous HAY BALE FASHION SHOW and the winning creation will be made into a real life dress! There will also be HaberFASHery workshops… a mashup of buttons, trimmings, t-shirts and fabric paints galore.

MEET THE NEO-NATURISTS: Port Eliot hosts the spectacular come-back of Wilma Johnson, Christine and Jennifer Binnie, who began their radical feminist performances with body-painting – after getting together at St Martin’s College of Art in the Eighties.

Plugging into the inclusive, revolutionary energy of great British creativity, here’s rainbow of opportunities to discuss issues, dress up, draw, learn and make stuff for everyone from children upwards.
