Emma Warren has been documenting culture since her friends started Jockey Slut magazine in the 1990s. She has written extensively, made radio documentaries and created the Steppas Delight compilation for Soul Jazz. She currently has a radio show on Worldwide FM and runs a monthly night putting together young London jazz musicians behind the turntables.
Emma will be talking to Hasseb Iqbal about the importance of having places to gather - they both have first-hand experiences of finding their place in different worlds, and from different generational perspectives. Emma grew up within 1990s rave culture and Hasseb found his home in the middle of the grassroots DIY culture that sits around the new London jazz scene. They both frequented an influential ad-hoc music venue called Total Refreshment Centre, or TRC. They’ll be talking about Emma’s book Make Some Space which documents the histories surrounding TRC, and about DIY culture across the generations.
