Arbell Lowther was brought up on a sheep farm in the Lake District, with her sisters Camilla Aboah, Sarah Husband and her brother Tom Lowther who continues the family tradition.
Arbell and her husband, Mark, bought their small masia, as a ruin in 1990 and they have gradually done it up and added the bodega step by step. They planted the first vines in the fields around the house in 2001 and have continued to acquire more land and plant more vines ever since. They have planted merlot, syrah, cabernet sauvignon and picapoll negre and mando, the last two varietals being autochthonous to the DO Pla de Bages. After some interesting years and a great deal of hard work finally Mark and Arbell produced a drinkable table wine in 2011. In 2014 they officially arrived with coupage of syrah, merlot and cabernet sauvignon, partially aged in French and American oak.
Clos Colltor is not officially ecological but it is as environmentally friendly as possible. No herbicides, pesticides or artificial fertilizers are used and much of the work is carried out by hand, including weeding and the harvest. Mark and Arbell work with the internationally acclaimed oenologist Joan Soler and are planning to join the DO Pla de Bages in 2016. Two versions of Clos Colltor are sold directly and throughout Cataluña. Mark’s sister Monika Linton CO of Brindisa and Tapas Kitchens is also a member of the team with whom they work closely.
Mark and Arbell live and work on the property with their daughter Honor and various pets.
