Rose Prince
Former reporter for Radio 4’s The Food Programme, contributor to the Independent on Sunday and food columnist for the Daily Telegraph, Rose Prince is the author of three highly acclaimed food books, The New English Kitchen, The Savvy Shopper and The New English Table. She’ll be doing special cookery demonstrations in the Big Kitchen at this year’s festival, including collaborations with Peter Brears and the Pengelly Sisters.
Rose writes about food because “there is less known about this essential daily rite than any other… this is a commodity we put inside our bodies and nourishment is much more than being ‘full’.” Her agenda has always been to “have a go at the bad, and celebrate the good. To broadcast the secrets of this industry, to educate, to tell you what they do not tell you. To know what questions to ask, and to name and shame when is necessary. On the other hand, there is a sector of the food industry that has true integrity that rears, grows and makes food that is 100% natural. I want to tell you about this food too.”
In the early 1990s, Rose ran Heidi Lascelles’ test kitchen in Books for Cook, cooking about 20 covers a day in chaotic circumstances in the famous West London cookery bookshop. She tested recipes from new books, old books; met more chefs, food writers, fellow enthusiasts, working with shop manager was Clarissa Dixon Wright: “Working with Clarissa was like being an undergraduate at the world’s finest university of food. I had over 4000 new and used books at my disposal.”
(On The New English Kitchen)
“An instant classic which is both an inspiring cookbook and a moving manifesto against the Tescoisation of Britain.”
The Observer
“A thought-provoking read as well as a recipe book. Prince comes to the rescue of the thrifty and the socially aware.”
The Sunday Times
“Impassioned, principled and packed with practical and inspiring recipes. It is the antithesis of some extravagant big-name cookery books.”
