Set up by Amrou Al-Kadhi – aka “Glamrou” – Denim was Cambridge University’s first and only drag troupe and event. and event. It was received with unprecedented and enormous success at the university, watched and celebrated by thousands of students over its years. At its core, Denim is a performance troupe. All its members are established actors, singers, and comedians in their own right, and the show consists of live singing accompanied with a full live drag jazz band, as well as a stand-up comedy narrative that drives the show.

Denim’s ultimate ethos is to make “drag” accessible to wide audiences; for too long, drag performing has been misconstrued as a form of “low” cultural practice that simply involves lip-syncing. Denim is dedicated to unshackling people’s perceptions of drag performing, showing it to be a form of high-performance in its own right. The Denims – Glamrou, Chrystal, Aphrodite, Elektra, Sporty Boy, Shirley, and Zazou – aim to uplift and inspire in their big and bold performances.

For the Port Eliot Festival, the Denims bring you “Stranded in Cornwall: Drag Queens Aboard and Abroad.” Involving your favourite anthems, from contemporary pop, 80’s disco and jazz, to your favourite musical theatre classics and other crowd favourites, the Denims will show you their strategies for surviving in an unfamiliar land.
