Joe Mordaunt Crook is a celebrated architectural historian. Besides many other writings, he is the author of The British Museum (1971); The Greek Revival (1972); William Burges (1981, 2013); The Dilemma of Style (1987); The Rise of the Nouveaux Riches (1999); The Architect’s Secret (2003); Brasenose: The Biography of an Oxford College (2008, 2010). He is a former Public Orator and Professor of Architectural History at London University, and a former Slade Professor and Waynflete Lecturer at Oxford. He is now an Honorary Fellow of Brasenose. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1988 and was appointed C.B.E. in 2003. For many years he has been a contributor to the Times Literary Supplement.
