In the Summer of the Hat – what else could 2011 be called after the Royal wedding? - Port Eliot welcomes the man who has brought British millinery to its very peak of creativity and popularity. Stephen Jones’ standing as Britain’s honorary international ambassador of millinery flair has been proved in record-breaking numbers: hundreds of thousands of visitors of all ages and persuasions in London, Melbourne, Istanbul and Antwerp have flocked to marvel at the vast cultural spectrum of headgear in two recent exhibitions, Hats, An Anthology by Stephen Jones and The Accent of Fashion. This year, Mr Jones OBE, will put the cherry on the top of that spectacular achievement by pulling off a never-before-attempted feat in the old kitchen of Port Eliot: with the culinary expertise of Lady Fiona Lansdowne at hand, he will show How to Bake a Hat.
“A deft conjurer, who can draw whimsy from a hat. Steeped in couture lore and craft, he nevertheless propels his art into the future with his ceaseless invention and thistledown touch.”
