Alabama 3 Unplugged
Brixton-based nine-piece Alabama 3 bring their eclectic brand of chaos to Port Eliot, in a new unplugged form. Flirting with an array of unique sounds from acid house to delta blues, the band are perhaps best known for their song ‘Woke Up This Morning’, which featured as the title track for cult US show The Sopranos. Their most recent album Revolver Soul (2010), is described as “soul music with a gun against your head”.
Now on their eighth studio release, Alabama 3 rose to fame on both sides of the Atlantic thanks to success with Exile to Coldharbour Lane (1997) and La Peste (2000), music that had legendary author Stephen King say “the thought of not having Alabama 3 fills me with horror”. Their ability to fuse humour with political and religious astuteness has brought them endless critical acclaim, including being described as “the best live band in the country” (the Guardian).
In the face of such praise, the band have still managed to keep all 18 of their feet firmly on the ground, staying close to their roots by releasing Revolver Soul under their own Hostage record label based on Brixton Road. This, despite an army of followers across the world, including an American fan base that still very much claim them as their own.
