Wurlitza
Back by popular demand, the wonderful St Germans based band Wurlitza will be starting the festival on Thursday evening with their performance of a live soundtrack to a silent film; A.E.Dupont’s 1929 masterpiece Piccadilly, starring Gilda Gray and Anna May Wong.
London’s early clubland scene in Soho and the immigrant district of Limehouse form the context for Piccadilly, a sumptuous tale of dancing, love, jealousy and revenge. Beautifully filmed, it exquisitely captures the division between high and low society.
Those of you who enjoyed Sunrise last year will find Piccadilly – with its air of jazz sophistication – completely different but equally enjoyable. The music accompanying the film is an eclectic mix, from Bach to the Buzzcocks, Leonard Cohen to Kylie Minogue, all performed in Wurlitza’s own unique style.
If you’ve never watched a silent film with live music before this is a must - and for those who have, get there early for a good seat!

“I loved Wurlitza’s live pop-to-classical mix.”

“Having seen Wurlitza perform live twice now, I fully recommend this Cornish band who are refreshingly different. A fusion of jazz and folk with a touch of classical thrown in.”
Nick Bailey, Classic FM
