Tom Baxter
There are not many singers whose intense performances can evoke a proposal of marriage but that’s just what happened to singer-songwriter Tom Baxter, when he played a gig in Ireland. This year the folk singer returns to his Cornish roots to play for us at Port Eliot and we can’t wait to see what happens…
The craft of songwriting has been with Tom his entire life. “My mum and dad were both musicians as well, they did the 1960s folk circuit for years,” he says. His brother Charlie learned the drums, Tom learned the guitar and by the time they were in their early teens, they’d put a band together. When he was 19, Tom moved to London to go to music college; gigging hard and banging away at locked industry doors. But it was the start of the process of developing from a mere musician into fully rounded songwriter.
His debut album, Feather & Stone, was released in 2004 to critical acclaim and he followed this up with Skybound in 2008. Tom spent most of last year travelling around India and is now in Devon where he is currently working on his next record and looking forward to getting back on tour and playing his new tunes. “After 15 or so years of doing nothing but music I needed to disappear for a while and have some new experience. No phone calls, emails or appointments to bother me. Just me, the woman I love, a guitar, and a few books. Magic!”
