Harper Simon
Harper Simon is a country folk-rock musician, and the son of legendary American singer-songwriter Paul Simon. He recently released his first album Harper Simon (2009), declared as “a scenic trip between divine cosmic country, Elliott Smith’s gossamer pop, and Paul Simon’s esteemed variety” (Mojo), and “full of crisp couplets and classically beautiful songs” (the Telegraph).
Harper’s career as a musician has taken many twists and turns prior to his solo release, from teaching other children about music on Sesame Street aged just four, to playing guitar on the Graceland album tour, aged 14. He also played in punk bands in New York after being kicked out of music college in Boston, and had moderate success playing live with his band Menlo Park, after eventually deciding to move to London.
His self-titled album has seen Harper find a literate and acoustic sound that he feels most comfortable with, and has drawn many inevitable comparisons to his father’s music. Indeed, the record was produced by Bob Johnston, the man who helped create some of Simon & Garfunkel’s most famous albums, and also features a variety of names from the Nashville music scene his dad played in. As far as Harper is concerned, this only proved to be a positive thing, saying “I was thrilled and moved beyond words to be able to work with some of the people who have featured on some of the best albums of all time.”
