The Leisure Society
With influences from the Beach Boys to Jules Verne and “just about everything we’ve seen, heard, touched and tasted”, The Leisure Society’s sound is as eclectic as the range of instruments they play, including ukulele, flute, glockenspiel and thumb piano. Their luscious melodies will be seeing out our lazy Sunday afternoon at Caught By The River this year.
The story of the Leisure Society began in Burton-Upon-Trent when Nick Hemming formed a band with Shane Meadows, Paddy Considine and Rich Eaton. Meadows and Considine went on to successful careers in film while Nick, in his own words, would spend a few years “working to support a music habit.”
Nick was later joined by Christian Hardy and by the end of 2008 the two friends had written and produced 30 songs, 11 of which appear on their debut album The Sleeper (2009). In 2009 a song from the album, ‘The Last Of The Melting Snow’ was nominated for an Ivor Novello award.

“A beautifully pastoral debut”
MOJO
“Unflinching clarity and a sense of longing…a uniquely British take on Americana; almost as if Scott Walker or Nick Drake had ‘gone country’, making music for coalminers rather than cowboys.”
