Will Hodgkinson

Will is the author of Guitar Man, Song Man and The Ballad Of Britain. He writes on music and culture for The Guardian, The Times, Mojo and Vogue. He’ll be talking about Corn On The Cob: The beginner’s guide to Cornish psychedelia and mythology and will perform with Michael Tyack (Princes in The Tower) as Corn On The Cob, a tribute to the totally obscure early 1970s Cornish folk-rock band, Cob.

The Ballad Of Britain, published in summer 2009, is a journey through the musical landscape of Britain, and an attempt to see if folklore and folk music is still alive. From spring to autumn, Will travelled through Britain with a portable recording device called a Zoom. The goal was to capture the spirit of the land and its people through its music. Along the way, he danced with gypsies in a wood in Sussex, visited a town of Bob Dylans in Scotland, was attacked by a large woman with a chair in Kent, almost brought to an end the short life of a promising young singer in Wales and discovered that what we need in life is right there in front of us. The Ballad Of Britain is the story of that journey.

Will also presents Songbook, a series of interviews with songwriters and bands including Jarvis Cocker, Duran Duran and Donovan, on Sky Arts.

“A six-stringed classic”

Dylan Jones, GQ, on Guitar Man

“A natural writer… when he sets off to drink at founts of wisdom in the rock guitar’s natural home, it’s a pleasure to go with him.”
