Sam Carter

Sam Carter is a singer-songwriter and finger-style guitarist whose insightful lyrics and playing style belie his young years. Winner of the Horizon Award for best newcomer at the 2010 BBC Folk Awards, Sam will be playing some of his haunting acoustic numbers for us this summer.

Originally from the Midlands and now based in London, Sam has honed his craft as both a writer and performer, studying with the award-winning Martin Simpson, one of the finest acoustic and slide guitar players in the world and touring with the folk ensemble Bellowhead. He has supported acts including Rachel Unthank & The Winterset, Davy Graham, Lisa Knapp, Spiers & Boden, Findlay Brown and John Smith. Nitin Sawhney has described him as having a “killer voice” and Time Out documented him as being able to “play his guitar like a harp”. Sam is also Emerging Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre.

His debut album Keepsakes (2009) was released on his own label, Captain Records. The beautiful album artwork includes a series of images of curious objects. At Sam’s request, fans sent him their very own keepsakes along with a note revealing their personal significance.
