Music and Migration

Joining Ceri Levy’s exciting line-up for The Bird Effect, Second Language will be holding a discussion about Music and Migration – a new music compilation CD supporting BirdLife’s Born to Travel campaign – using two decks on stage. Second Language are Martin Holm, David Sheppard and Glen Johnson.

Each of Music and Migration’s 21 songs are by different artists and are new and exclusive to the record. This is the second release by the Second Language Music record label and, like all the label’s work, is a limited edition.

Martin is an experimental musician, incorrigible record collector and communication officer at DOF, the Danish partner in BirdLife International. He’s the co-founder of the Second Language label and the main person behind Music and Migration.

David is a London-based musician and a writer. Known for his work with cult instrumental groups State River Widening and Ellis Island Sound, among numerous other musical projects, he has also been a regular contributor to Mojo magazine for a decade, and has written for Q, Uncut, the Observer, the Glasgow Herald and the Mail on Sunday. He’s currently co-editor of The Saatchi Gallery Magazine, Art & Music. He also wrote the acclaimed biography of Brian Eno, On Some Faraway Beach (2008).

Glen is a London-based songwriter, most notably for the cult Anglo-French ‘ghostrock’ group, Piano Magic, with whom he has recorded over 10 albums in 13 years. As a former label manager for Rough Trade Records, he also ran his own Tugboat imprint, releasing records by the likes of Low and Life Without Buildings.

“…a book which sets new standards for the rock biography.”
